– CBGB had been around since 1969 in an earlier incarnation, Hilly’s on the Bowery, which was named after owner Hilly Kristal; in late 1973, he changed the name to Country, BlueGrass, Blues and Other Music for Uplifting Gourmandizers—which was shortened to CBGB-OMFUG.
