Osceola is the county seat of Clarke County, which was established on January 13, 1846. The county was named in honor of James Clarke (1812-1850) who had served as the third governor of the Iowa Territory (1845-1846). In 1851, Osceola, named for the Seminole Native American Chief, was selected as the county seat.
