Newton is the county seat of Jasper County, which was established on January 13, 1846. The county was named for Sergeant William Jasper (1750-1779) who was killed during the Revolutionary War. In 1846, Newton City was chosen as the site of the county seat, and in 1847, the name of the town was changed to Newton. In Jasper County, both Newton and Colfax received Carnegie grants.
