Chariton is the county seat of Lucas County, which was established on January 13, 1846. Lucas County was named in honor of Robert Lucas (1781-1853) who served as the first govenor of the Territory of Iowa. The site for the county seat was first named Polk, then it was changed to Chariton Point, and then by 1850, to Chariton.
