Burlington is the county seat of Des Moines county, which was established on September 6, 1834. The name was taken from the Des Moines River which ran through the original county of Demoine which, along with DeBuque, was one of the two original counties of the state of Iowa. Burlington had been established by 1829, and it became the county seat in 1838.
