Algona is the county seat of Kossuth County, the largest in Iowa. The county was established on January 15, 1851, and was named for Lajos Kossuth (1802-1894), a Hungarian patriot. The county seat was sited at Call’s Grove, which by 1866 was later renamed Algona.
